EUGENE, Ore. - The world's largest caramel corn ball made its debut appearance Tuesday in Oregon and was even given a name.
Cosmos Creations, of Junction City, constructed the colossal creation called "Carl."
"It was quite an endeavor! You're dealing with a lot of weight," said general manager Ron Evans.
Weighing in at 6,780 pounds, the corn ball equaled the weight of two and a half mini coopers. Evans said the trick to building the big ball was to start with a sturdy base. They even cooked a stickier caramel recipe to coat the top of the concoction.
Evans said although the drive to the fair with the corn ball was a little nerve wrecking, it was also entertaining.
"It was really cool to watch people, kind of driving along there, every day, and then they go, 'What is that?' You know? You saw an awful lot of that. And then people that are passing, so down they look and look, and look, and then they'll go on. It's quite a nice thing to see in the corner of your eye," Evans said.
Carl won't officially be inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records, due to certain stipulations which include a rule that the ball would have to be consumed within two weeks.
It took the crew about a month to build.
Evans said they plan to take Carl on tour over the next several years. In the meantime, you can take a picture next to the colossal cornball at a selfie booth, Wednesday through Sunday, at the Lane County Fair.
