The Supreme Court decided on Friday that cities can enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outdoors in West Coast areas where shelter space is lacking.

Stephanie Day CATCH Executive Director released a statement regarding the Johnson v. Grants Pass ruling:

This is a heartbreaking decision. As the cost of living dramatically outpaces income for millions of Americans and homelessness has exploded since COVID, this decision feels like a punch in the gut. Our community, our state and our country do not have sufficient housing nor shelter resources to meet the growing need and this decision makes those without resources criminally liable for the lack of community resources. My hope is that this decision will motivate more community members to join the movement to end homelessness in Idaho so that fewer people are negatively impacted. We know how to end homelessness, we just need enough people to move in the same direction together! It will truly take a village!

CATCH is a local nonprofit working to house Idaho families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the Treasure Valley.
