Recently, the New England Patriots parted ways with their veteran head coach Bill Belichick following a stretch of underwhelming seasons. Belichick failed to land a head coaching gig with any other team in the league and his future remains uncertain. Amidst this, his son Steve Belichick is now expected to join the University of Washington as their defensive coordinator.

Steve Belichick, son of the ingenious head coach Bill Belichick, spent the last 12 years with the New England-based football team working on his father’s coaching staff. For the last 4 seasons, Steve was responsible for defensive play calling and also served as their outside linebackers coach.

Throughout his 12-year tenure in New England, Steve Belichick worked on the defensive side of the game as a defensive assistant (2012-15), safeties coach (2016-18), secondary/safeties (2019) and finally outside linebackers coach (2020-23). He has a lot of experience in defensive play calling and will be a great addition to the Washington Huskies, who made it to the national championship game last season.

Now he is set to join Jedd Fisch, who became the head coach of Washington following the departure of Kalen DeBoer. Steve and Fisch spent some time in New England back in 2020, when Fisch was working as the Patriots’ quarterbacks coach before becoming the head coach of the Arizona Wildcats.

Steve Belichick, son of Bill, is likely to be hired by the Washington Huskies to be their new DC, per @mzenitz. A deal has not been finalized yet, but that’s where it is trending.

Previously, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that both Steve and his brother Brian Belichick would be given an opportunity to stay with the Patriots under new head coach Jerod Mayo. However, it seems like Steve has decided to go his own way and try his skills at the college football level. Washington will be entering the 2024 season with a lot of expectations and Steve will have to do his best to not fail.

Football fans on social media were surprised to see the 36-year-old Steve Belichick leaving the NFL and testing his skills at the college level. The Huskies fans, however, were delighted that they could rope in a young DC, who also has a lot of experience.

Some Patriots fans were also sad to see one of their long-time coaches leave, but the Huskies fans are really excited about the new addition. Check out some of the reactions below.

Better coach than Bill… Not a Tom Brady merchant.

Nonetheless, Steve Belichick can get to work with the Huskies and climb the ladder up to become a head coach. On the other hand, Bill Belichick has to wait at least one more year to have a shot at becoming a head coach in the NFL again.
