Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has spoken highly of Mick Schumacher in light of Logan Sargeant‘s sacking rumors. Sargeant is speculated to be replaced by Schumacher for the remainder of 2024, especially after his recent crash at Zandvoort.
Logan Sargeant made his debut for Williams Racing at the start of the previous season. He has since been fairly poor for the Grove-based team, scoring only a single point so far. On the other hand, Mick Schumacher has been longing for a second chance since leaving Haas F1 at the end of 2022.
Schumacher is currently the reserve driver for the Silver Arrows and raced for two seasons in Formula 1, scoring 12 points. Toto Wolff views Michael Schumacher‘s son as being worthy of a second chance on the grid.
I would very much hope that Mick gets the chance, because we haven’t seen the real Mick. You’re not winning F4, F3 and F2 and then you’re not performing in F1… I think he deserves a chance. If the opportunity would be at Williams it’s something that we would be cheering for. But it’s [Team Principal] James Vowles’s decision.Toto Wolff said to SkySportsF1
Sargeant will inevitably hand over his Formula 1 seat to Carlos Sainz in 2025, who signed a multi-year deal a few weeks ago. The American driver will now try to put in his best efforts to leave a lasting impression with his performances if he is not sacked before this week’s Italian GP.
Toto Wolff explains reasons behind Mercedes shortfalls at Dutch GP
Mercedes appeared uncharacteristically weak in terms of pace during the race at Zandvoort. Toto Wolff was disappointed at the Silver Arrows’ result and has thus, stated some probable reasons for their lackluster run.
I think it was two factors. We back-to-backed the update kit on Friday, which in the end left us with not a lot of data – the update kit that we put onto the car at Spa on Friday and then took off again. And then obviously with the lack of running, like everybody else, maybe it didn’t decide the right things for the car, so there could be a few factors in play that contributed to this non-performance.Toto Wolff told PlanetF1 after the Dutch Grand Prix
Wolff claimed that the Brackley-based team failed to gather sufficient data to analyze their upgrades at Dutch GP. He also stated that varying conditions led to a lack of running with the W15, which hindered their preparations even further.
Mercedes is currently fourth in the championship with 276 points to their name. Their performance over the past few weeks has been highly rated throughout the paddock, which is what the team will try to continue going forward.
